1930s: International students organize, launching a tradition of global citizenship 

The student body includes a significant contingent of international students from the Philippines and Japan. The students launch campus groups such as the Filipino Circle to support each other and to increase awareness. A student commitment to organizing is born, establishing a tradition of activism and embrace of global citizenship. 

1919: C.C. Chapman’s gift sparks ongoing support by visionary philanthropists 

A $400,000 challenge by prominent banker and grower Charles C. Chapman is met by other Disciples of Christ leaders. 1954: Chapman relocates to Orange County  

Having outgrown its space on North Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles, Chapman moves to a new campus in Orange County, five miles from the still-unfinished Disneyland. Today, the region is a hub of biotechnology and other emerging industries, making it one of the nation’s most dynamic centers of innovation.

1961: The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. speaks in Memorial Hall

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. speaks in Memorial Hall as part of Chapman’s popular Artist Lecture Series. Over the years, Chapman hosts many groundbreaking artists and leaders, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, Dolores Huerta and Angela Davis.

2010: Physics professor Yakir Aharonov awarded the National Medal of Science

Chapman physics professor Yakir Aharonov is awarded the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest scientific honor. Aharonov and his colleagues at the Institute for Quantum Studies build bridges to practical use of their foundational work, sparking advances in areas such as satellites and information processing.

2013: Rinker Health Science campus opens in Irvine

The Rinker Health Science campus opens in Irvine, providing a state-of-the-art home for Chapman’s new School of Pharmacy. The campus now also houses Chapman’s Physician Assistant Program and its innovative Brain Institute, reflecting the university’s growing emphasis on research and teaching in the practical sciences.   

2016: Opening of Musco Center for the Arts hailed as “an ideal opera house”

In 2019 the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education elevated Chapman to R2 status.

Covid-19

With support from a Kay Family Foundation grant, researchers from Chapman’s Center for Excellence in Biopsychosocial Approaches to Health conducted a large-scale study of COVID-19’s mental health impacts, including how minorities experienced prejudice because of perceived connections to the virus.
