Chapman University Research Awards for May – June 2024

The Office of Research announced the following research grants awarded to Chapman University faculty in April, May and June 2024.

$10,000 – ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Leadership Scholars grant

Jennifer Ko, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, School of Pharmacy

“Fostering Patient-Pharmacist Concordance with Patients Who Speak Spanish”

Ko will collaborate with faculty members Jerika Lam, Richard Beuttler and Emmanuelle Schwartzman on the grant.

$430,000 – National Eye Institute

Ajay Sharma, associate professor, School of Pharmacy

“Targeting the multicellular process of corneal regeneration and vascularization to enhance outcome of cornea transplantation”

The research is in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Virginia. Of the $3.4 million awarded in this project, Sharma’s lab will receive $430,000 over the next five years to optimize the formulation of a therapeutic designed to increase the success rate of corneal transplant.

$19,836 –Industry grant from Melinta Therapeutics

Gary Fong, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, School of Pharmacy

“Identifying the Need and Potential Role for a Novel Long-Acting Antifungal in a Diverse, Underserved Population”

Fong is a Co-PI with Scott Filler, professor of medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine and academic chief of research, Division of Infectious Diseases at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

$1.71 million – National Institute on Aging

Rachita Sumbria, associate professor, School of Pharmacy

This grant continues the Sumbria lab’s ongoing work in drug delivery systems for Alzheimer’s disease therapeutics. They build upon their earlier success in modifying erythropoietin (EPO) so that it can cross the blood-brain barrier and potentially have better efficacy in treating Alzheimer’s at lower, more tolerable doses. The Sumbria lab will receive funds over the next five years.
