Chapman University Professor, Scott W. Howe, Co-Authors Fifth Edition of California Criminal Law: Cases and Problems

Professor Scott W. Howe, of Chapman University’s Dale E. Fowler School of Law has authored  the fifth edition of “California Criminal Law: Cases and Problems.” Published in collaboration with Steven F. Shatz and Amy Flynn by Carolina Academic Press, this highly anticipated edition offers a comprehensive exploration of California criminal law for students and legal professionals.

Recent developments in California criminal law were incorporated into the latest edition, says Professor Howe.

“The criminal law of California has seen some major changes in the last few years, on subjects as varied as shoplifting, murder and aiding and abetting, and this new edition covers those changes,” he says. “The major changes regarding the law of criminal homicide concern when felony-murder doctrine can apply and who can be liable as an aider and abettor in those cases.”

The book features five new cases and a host of additional problems that reflect the evolving legal landscape. In addition, the authors have thoughtfully included a set of PowerPoint slides to enhance classroom instruction and enrich the learning experience for both students and instructors.

Howe, the Frank L. Williams Professor of Criminal Law at Chapman University, brings his extensive expertise and experience to this authoritative publication. California Criminal Law focuses on the intricacies of the law within a single jurisdiction, presenting an array of cases and problems to illustrate legal principles and enhance students’ ability to construct legal arguments.

“One of the strengths of this book as a teaching tool is its focused approach on criminal law, specifically tailored to the bar exam and its application in California,” Howe says. “Unlike other criminal law books for law students that encompass multiple states’ laws and hypothetical criminal codes, this book prioritizes the actual laws applicable to the practice and the ones tested on the bar exam.”

The fifth edition of “California Criminal Law” builds upon the esteemed reputation of its predecessors. Each chapter begins with a concise introduction, providing an overview of the key issues to be examined. Through the inclusion of complete case examples, students gain exposure to well-developed legal arguments. The book also presents one hundred real-life problems derived from actual cases, challenging students to construct appropriate legal arguments based on the preceding materials. By minimizing notes and instead encouraging students to consider policy issues and alternative viewpoints, the authors foster critical thinking and analysis of California law.
