Henrik Cronqvist Named New Dean of Chapman’s Argyros School of Business and Economics

Henrik Cronqvist, Ph.D., vice dean at the University of Miami Herbert Business School, has been named dean of the Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University.

“I am excited to join the positive momentum and trajectory of the Argyros School,’ said Cronqvist, whose appointment will begin July 31, 2022. “I am also looking forward to returning to beautiful Southern California – my favorite part of the U.S.,” he said. 

A native of Sweden, Cronqvist is a graduate of the Stockholm School of Economics (MS in business and economics) as well as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (Ph.D. in finance). His doctoral advisor was Nobel Laureate Richard H. Thaler. Prior to Cronqvist’s appointment at the University of Miami, he was on the faculty of the Fisher College of Business (Ohio State University), the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance of Claremont McKenna College (where he held the McMahon Family Endowed Chair in Corporate Finance), and the China Europe International Business School. In that role, he was named the Zhongkun Group Endowed Chair.

Cronqvist is an award-winning researcher with a distinguished record of publications on topics focused on investors’ behavior examined from a variety of cultural and social determinants. His work has appeared in Management Science, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Political Economy, and American Economic Review, among other outlets.

Cronqvist is a frequent speaker at the national and international gatherings of his professional associations. He has delivered keynote addresses to universities and corporate boards in Auckland (New Zealand), Paris, Hanoi, Florence, Copenhagen, Mexico City and London. His work has received extensive media coverage by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Barron’s, Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg, The New York Times, Financial Times, The Atlantic, The Economist, CNN Headline News, CNBC, PBS’s Nightly Business Report and NPR’s Marketplace Money.

In 2015, Cronqvist joined Miami Herbert Business School as a professor of finance and rose through the ranks as director of Ph.D. programs (2016-2019), chair of the Department of Finance (2017-2018), vice dean for Faculty and Research (2018-2020), vice dean for Graduate Business Programs and Executive Education (2020-2021) and, most recently, vice dean for Lifelong Learning and Executive Education (starting in 2021). 

He is also an accomplished and experienced instructor. He has delivered courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels on topics spanning from venture capital and corporate finance to security analyses and valuation. He has also led executive education programs in the U.S., Asia, and Latin America, and has consulted with corporations, banks and law firms.

A generous citizen of his communities, Cronqvist has an extensive service record that includes membership on the Provost Advisory Council and on scores of committees and task forces, including Promotion and Tenure and University Research Council. He has served in editorial roles for Review of Financial Studies and International Review of Finance, is a frequent referee for major journals in his field (e.g., Management Science, Journal of Finance, Quarterly Journal of Economics) as well as a reviewer for funding agencies worldwide (e.g., Israel Science Foundation (ISF); National Science Foundation (NSF); Research Grant Council (RGC) of Hong Kong).
