After his entree and before the cupcake bar expedition, Quaylan Allen, Ph.D, assistant professor in the
College of Educational Studies
, admitted he will probably cry when his students graduate.
To this, Emily Maples ’16 and Jasmine Hastings ’16, both educational studies majors, smiled.
“You get to know each other pretty well in CES,” said Hastings.
Maples and Hastings have been students of Allen’s multiple times in the last few years, but at Wednesday’s
Lunch with a Professor
they got to find out they had something more in common than courses and classwork.
It’s Disney, specifically, going to Disneyland in their spare time. Allen’s family was there right at that moment, and Maples and Hastings planned to go soon.
“Maybe we’ll see each other there,” Allen said.
Students and professors might spend months together in the classroom, hours in office time and organizations, but how well do they really get to know each other? Sometimes you need a little sit down time to really get into a conversation.
To tackle that, Chapman’s Office of Housing and Student Life organized
Lunch with a Professor,
a program where one to three students can invite a faculty member to a free lunch.
There’s breaking of bread and breaking down barriers between students and faculty. This is assuming you’re eating bread at all – if not, there’s gluten-free, vegan or paleo options to choose from in the dining commons.

Jason Keller, Ph.D,
Schmid College of Science & Technology
, was having trouble making up his mind about what to eat.
He settled on a stir-fry mix and sushi.
Amber West ’16 and Justin Villasenor ’15 were Keller’s lunch hosts.
Villasenor eyes his Moco Loco paleo option. It looks to be a large beef patty of some kind, on rice, with a fried egg on top.
“I’m not really sure what it all is – but it looks good,” Villasenor said.
West appears to have a bratwurst sandwich.
With all the food on the table, it becomes difficult to discern who’s eating what.
Neither is an ecology student of Keller’s, nor are they likely to ever be. Instead, they met Keller through the
Next Step Social Justice Retreat
.
The retreat made such an impression on West and Villasenor that they promised to make time to meet up in the future and consistently stay in touch, particularly with Keller. Getting a chance to take him out for a lunch was natural extension of that goal said Villasenor.
The option for students to be able to take their professors to lunch breaks makes each group a little more accessible tot he other Keller said.
“This lets students see faculty as people and I think it helps humanize faculty to students,” Keller said.

Just want to clarify… the Lunch with a Professor program is organized by the Office of Housing & Residence Life (OHRL) and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (OURCA), with generous sponsorship from the Dean of Students Office.
The turnout this semester’s Program was outstanding, and we in OHRL look forward to working with these great campus partners again for the Spring Lunch with a Professor Week, April 11-15, 2016!
Congrats on the success everyone!
