Need a little music to perk up the January lull? The College of Performing Arts is hosting three guest performers this month, including a free “Evening of Musical Theatre.”

Percussion artist and composer Johannes Fischer will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24 in Salmon Recital Hall.  Fischer performs with the Eardrum Percussion Duo, Freiburg Percussion Group, duo d’accord, and the duo Apeiron, and is a recent first place winner of the 56th International ARD Music Competition in Munich.  He currently serves in the percussion faculty at the Conservatory of Music in Lugano (Switzerland) and as a professor at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck (Germany).  Tickets are $10; $5 for senior citizens and students.

Then at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, university student performers will be joined by two guest performers — celebrated opera singer Jeralyn Refeld and concert pianist and accompanist Christoph Weinhart — in “An Evening of Musical Theatre.” The program will feature students of the Interterm Musical Theatre class performing solo and ensemble numbers from composers Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Sondheim. The show was conceived by Refeld, with contributions from Dale A. Merrill, associate professor of dance, and coaching and direction from adjunct professor David Alt.

As the William Hall Visiting Professor, Refeld presents workshops in musical theatre and group song and conducts master classes in vocal performance, both classical and in musical theatre. Weinhart teaches at the Würzburg Academy and at the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding in Munich. Admission is free.
