Alex Ballard ’20 has been awarded Chapman University’s highest undergraduate student honor, the Cheverton Award. Dean of Students Jerry Price made the announcement during an online presentation of the Campus Leadership Awards on May 15.
The Cheverton Award is the oldest and highest undergraduate student honor, awarded by a vote of the full Chapman faculty. A gift of the class of 1929, the original bronze Cheverton Award cup remains on exhibit in Argyros Forum along with its successor, a silver bowl. These trophies are engraved with the names of all Cheverton awardees since 1929.
Ballard, who triple majored in political science, economics and history, was able to watch the announcement from home. “My family was gathered around me and my heart was beating very fast because I was nervous. When Dean Price announced I won, I genuinely burst into tears, so in shock that I had been recognized with this incredible honor,” he says. “Winning the Cheverton Award is validation of my four years of hard work and sacrifice, as well as recognition for the countless individuals who helped me get here. It still feels surreal, so I hope I can continue to represent Chapman well after graduation.”
