Shira Klein, associate professor and chair of the Department of History at Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, was one of seven members selected to be part of Wiki Education’s inaugural Humanities and Social Justice Advisory Committee, which will support the Wikipedia Student Program’s Knowledge Equity initiative in partnership with the Mellon Foundation.

The committee will provide important feedback on the Wikipedia Student Program framework and materials, aiding in the initiative to ensure Wikipedia reflects diverse perspectives accurately.

“Wiki Education does such phenomenally important work that I always pounce on every opportunity to work with them,” said Klein. “Wikipedia’s articles about history and religion have real-life impacts on the world. What people read on Wikipedia shapes the opinions they form about politics, social justice and so forth. Therefore, we need to make sure Wikipedia gets it right, and this project is going to help that goal.”

Klein’s areas of expertise include Italian Jewish history and digital humanities including production on Wikipedia, and is co-author of Wikipedia’s Intentional Warping of Polish-Jewish History in the peer-reviewed Journal of Holocaust Research.

Klein earned a Bachelor of Arts from Tel Aviv University, a Master of Arts from the University of La Sapienza, and a Ph.D. from New York University.
