Chapman University alumnus Oliver Mathias ‘21 is mending broken hearts using the power of artificial intelligence in his app “Breakup Buddy,” designed to alleviate the pain of heartbreak and guide individuals toward a brighter romantic future.
This revolutionary app combines cutting-edge AI algorithms with a touch of digital empathy to provide solace and support during these difficult times. Mathias leveraged the breakthroughs in Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 model, to empower Breakup Buddy with conversational abilities. By harnessing LLMs, the app could now offer an affordable and efficient solution to simulate human-like conversations. This enhancement allowed users to receive interactive guidance tailored to their unique situations. While Mathias emphasized that LLMs are not perfect and have limitations in long-term context retention, he expressed his commitment to continually improving Breakup Buddy.
“Breakup Buddy is the ultimate wingman for the brokenhearted,” shares Mathias, a self-proclaimed techno-therapist. “It’s like having a compassionate friend in your pocket, ready to give you a virtual shoulder to cry on and expert advice to help you navigate the treacherous waters of heartbreak.”
Mathias, who graduated from Chapman University just two years ago with a bachelor’s degree in business and a minor in computer science, was well prepared to tackle real-world problems with creativity and intellect. With Breakup Buddy, he has channeled his passion for both technology and human connection into a game-changing solution for the lovelorn.
“While we can’t entirely shield ourselves from heartbreak, we can certainly make the journey to recovery a little less daunting,” explains Mathias. “Breakup Buddy is here to bridge the gap between emotional healing and cutting-edge technology, proving that artificial intelligence has a heart too.”
The app has received rave reviews from early users who swear by its ability to help them regain their confidence and embrace new beginnings. Users have described Breakup Buddy as “a digital therapist with a dash of wit,” “the best friend you always wished you had,” and even “the Silicon Valley cupid.” Breakup Buddy is available for download in the App Store and Google Play.
