Chapman University’s Nobel Laureate, Economist Vernon Smith Honored with the First-ever Doti-Spogli Award

Chapman University honors economist and Nobel laureate Vernon Smith with the first Doti-Spogli Free Enterprise Award. The award recognizes a faculty member whose research or outreach spotlights the benefits of economic freedom and the policies that extend it.

Former U.S. Ambassador Ron Spogli and President Emeritus Jim Doti unveiled the prize and Doti-Spogli Chair in 2022 to ensure that the teaching of free market principles would always be a part of the curriculum at the Argyros School of Business and Economics. Doti called Smith his hero when presenting him the award and shared, “In terms of bringing the institute together, he also really embodies the mission of Chapman University, and a major part of that is to get students and faculty working together.”

Professor Smith received a share of the Nobel Prize in 2002 for his work pioneering work in experimental economics. He created Chapman’s Economic Science Institute when he arrived at the university 15 years ago and holds joint appointments in Chapman’s Argyros School of Business and Economics and Fowler School of Law.

Argyros School of Business and Economics rose this week to No. 60 in the new Best Business School rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

Additionally, the Doti-Spogli Chair will recognize a student each year who writes the best paper promoting free enterprise. This year’s paper topic is “California Dreaming: What can be done to bring back business to the Golden State?”
