4 Ways to Revamp your Work-from-Home Routine

By now, you’ve probably been working from home for about six to eight weeks. At first, the novelty of working from home and staying safe was a welcome change. But as the weeks have passed and you’ve settled into your routine, you may be feeling the weight of working where you live. Here are four things you can do to switch up your routine and add some freshness back into your work days.

1. Wake up earlier, and do something you love

While rolling out of bed and heading straight to your laptop can seem like the natural thing to do, it can be less than ideal for easing into work. Instead, make it a point to wake up thirty minutes earlier and start your day doing something you love. For some it’s reading, for others it’s meditating or listening to a podcast. Whatever it is, make time to do it. Having that time to yourself before work begins and the kids wake up will set the tone for the rest of your day.

2. Change up your work space

By this point, all of us have designated a place in our house as our “home office.” Whether it’s your couch, a seat at your kitchen table or your kid’s bedroom, change it up for the week. Try working on your porch and getting some fresh air or sitting by a window and getting some natural light in.

3. Put on Work Clothes

As tempting as it is to work in your pajamas, putting on work clothes acts as a physical cue that lets your mind know it’s time to work. Wearing clothes you would normally wear to work helps draw the line between work and home. If you’ve gone through the past few weeks wearing nothing but sweatpants, try reintroducing work attire into your work days.

4. Take Advantage of your “Evening Commute”

Because all of us are telecommuting now, we all have spare time in our hands. Be intentional about taking that extra hour or fifteen minutes, and use it to transition out of work. Rather than tackling house chores immediately after your work day, take a walk or get a workout in. Doing so will prompt you to pencil in a break and help you compartmentalize work and home.
