Jimmy Finds His Voice
Doti chronicles his real-life childhood experience of embracing a speaking role in a school play despite a speech impediment.
“I had a terrible speech impediment growing up. I wanted to write this story because I remember being made fun of and bullied as a child. But children may relate to the book because they’re shy or feel too tall or too short or, in some way, feel they don’t fit in. an important questions for you people is: How do you face and overcome challenges?” he told interviewer Lia Martirosyan

This is Doti’s second children’s book. His first,
A Christmas Adventure in Little Italy
, also illustrated by Mertins, recounted a childhood tale of a boy and his dog, set against the backdrop of a 1950s-era Italian-American neighborhood.
