Chili, music, football, fun — Homecoming rocked with something for everyone

Thousands of students, families and friends poured onto Chapman University during Homecoming and Family Weekend Friday, Oct. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 7, for reunions, music, talks and lectures, hot chili, a festive beer and wine garden, great football and a leisurely Sunday brunch.

The Chapman University Toyota of Orange 5K was the greatest success ever, with nearly 2,000 runners. Top winners and their times were Sydney Gidabuday 15:19.1  Dianna Chivakos 17:30.1

Winning the Best Overall Award at the Chili Cook-Off was the Greek organization Phi Kappa Tau. The Most Spirited Award went to Team CC Chefs (Disciples of Christ) and the Chapman chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association won “People’s Choice.”

The Black Student Union Alumni Reunion and Dedication Luncheon was held in honor of the late Professor Richard Doetkott and was organized by Emma Salahuddin ’71. The alumni group also dedicated to Leatherby Libraries the original LP, and digitally mastered CD, of “Worship in Black America.” The album was recorded in 1968 by the Black Student Union Choir at Chapman. They also announced the establishment of the Black Student Union Paul Mayfield Endowment raised $25,000 at the luncheon with generous gifts from multiple donors, including John Sanders ’70, the first president of the Black Student Union.
