Chapman University education graduate student Ashley Hurlock ’12 has won a $5,000 scholarship available only to students headed for math and science teaching careers.
Hurlock is pursuing a master’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in biology. The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Educational Foundation Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) Teaching Scholarship is part of a program created to help support future teachers planning to teach middle and high school science and math.
“The latest studies show we are continuing to fall behind while other countries multiply their investments in science, math and technical education,” said Fred Rainbow, vice president for education, AFCEA International. “Our schools, labs, industries, military, government agencies – plus the quality of our lives – will suffer if we don’t address this as one of the greatest challenges facing America.”
This is the second consecutive year that students from Chapman’s secondary science/math teacher preparation program have been chosen for this honor.
In addition to the scholarship, each graduating recipient, upon assuming a STEM teaching position in a U.S. middle or secondary school, is eligible to receive a $1,000 teaching tools grant per year for three years.
