In recognition of his work as dean of Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and for his efforts to promote green businesses in Orange County and beyond, Dean Menas Kafatos, Ph.D., has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Leadership and Professional Service Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Orange County Chapter.

Dean Kafatos’ interest in helping local businesses and companies develop energy-efficient technologies and partnerships was among the many reasons he was chosen for the award, said Russell Hunter, past chairman of the Orange County section of IEEE. Hunter noted Dean Kafatos’ involvement in helping to organize business forums that have featured leaders in the field of energy technology.

“That has been a big topic in IEEE for the last three years. We are very interested in what can we do about greener energy,” Hunter says.

Hunter also cited Dean Kafatos’ leadership in Schmid College’s earth science and hazards forecasting research as another factor in the award committee’s decision. As the local IEEE award winner, Dean Kafatos becomes a nominee for the Southern California regional award.
