Homecoming and Family Weekend offers something for all

Homecoming and Family Weekend is almost here, and there’s a slew of activities open to all, including a pops concert, a fascinating art exhibit, volleyball and football games, a Shabbat service and dinner, the “funnest” 5K run, a chili cook-off, a day of community service and an evening of opera.

First, a quick reminder: Time is running out to register for Saturday’s 5^th Annual Chapman University Toyota of Orange 5K Run/Walk, or as we like to call it, The Flattest, Fastest and “Funnest” 5K in the World! Every entrant receives a commemorative medal, a technical shirt, a goody bag stuffed with treasure and the Chapman University 5K tradition, that breakfast of champions, featuring steel-cut oats and fresh fruit. Register by Oct. 20 and it’s just $40. Race day registration is $45, so we weren’t joshing when we said time is running out! Proceeds benefit the Chapman Scholarship Fund.

Other highlights of Homecoming weekend include:

• Picnic and Pops, an outdoor concert featuring the Chapman Wind Symphony performing movie music against a backdrop of film clips, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Attallah Piazza. Bring a blanket and pack your own picnic or pre-purchase a spaghetti dinner for $15 from Parent and Alumni Relations.
• Shabbat Service and Dinner, a complimentary kosher dinner will be provided by Hillel, with time for questions and answers for those attending their first Shabbat, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Wilkinson Founders Chapel, Fish Interfaith Center. • Women’s Volleyball vs. Southwestern (Ariz.) at 7 p.m. in Hutton Sports Center, Lastinger Athletics Complex.
• “If Music be the Food of Love,” an evening of opera scenes by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Bizet performed by Opera Chapman at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. with special $10 Family Weekend pricing in Salmon Recital Hall, Bertea Hall 100.
• “un-historical documents,” a group exhibition of multimedia works by five contemporary artists at Guggenheim Gallery, Friday noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Chili Cook-Off, noon to 4 p.m., Bert C. Williams Mall. Admission is free, and tasting cups are just 50 cents. There will also be entertainment provided by the 1980s rock band Sound Cake, a beer garden and children’s activities.
• Chapman football vs. La Verne at 7 p.m. Saturday, Ernie Chapman Stadium.
• The Chapman Day of Service, an annual day of service open to all Chapman students, faculty, staff, alumni, and families, starts with a 10 a.m. gathering led by President Jim Doti on Sunday in Attallah Piazza. A variety of service projects are ready for willing hands, from deep cleaning at Mary’s Kitchen to mural painting at Cambridge Elementary School. Register at Student Civic Engagement.
