Chapman recognized for support to first-generation students

Chapman University’s
outstanding efforts to attract first-generation students and other underserved populations has earned it a spot in the new Center for Student Opportunity’s
2011 College Access & Opportunity Guide
. The publication is a comprehensive college guidebook that highlights universities that make exceptional efforts to create supportive programs and environments for low-income, first-generation college-bound students.

Inclusion in the guidebook is an honor and recognition of the university’s longstanding commitment to assisting first-generation college students, said Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Admission Officer Michael Drummy.

“Chapman’s inclusion in the Center for Student Opportunity’s
2011 College Access and Opportunity Guide
is the result of our extensive efforts to reach out to disadvantaged students through a variety of programs both on and off campus, as well as our Thurgood Marshall Scholars program, which helps fund students who would be the first from their immediate family to attend college,” Drummy said.

The Thurgood Marshall Scholars program was established in the mid-1980’s, and about 40 students a year receive assistance from it as part of their financial aid and/or scholarship package, Drummy added.

The Center for Student Opportunity (CSO) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting higher-education opportunities for first-generation and other historically underserved college-bound students. CSO programs serve colleges and universities, counselors and community-based organizations in support of their college access goals. More information about CSO is available at the
