This week Jared Parmenter, interactive media specialist at

, answers “What are you reading this summer?”

“Looking for a crash course in the new frontiers of social media?  Pick up
Chris Brogan’s

Social Media 101.
This handy guide teaches the basics of the social web – everything from setting up your first Facebook fan page, to advice on producing great blog content, to advanced tips on cultivating and curating your own online networks – in a fun, lighthearted format that embraces creativity and independent thought.  Compiled mostly from posts already available on his personal blog, the book is divided into practical sections that break down abstract ideas and problems into bite-sized, action-oriented chunks.  While it doesn’t boast an incredibly comprehensive table of contents, it is a great introductory text for any hungry social media student – and unlike most first-year textbooks, this one only costs about the price of a pizza.” (Editor’s note: Watch a Chris Brogan interview on
Dialogue with Doti and Dodge

Laura Silva, web coordinator for
Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences
, shares a party favorite, Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookies. Silva has even made these without the chocolate chips and they are still a party favorite.

Cream Cheese, Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

1 8-ounce package cream cheese

½ cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg yolk

1 box yellow cake mix

1 bag of milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Let cream cheese and butter come to room temperature. Cream them together. Add remaining ingredients (one at a time) and mix well. Chill dough before baking (even if it’s just 15-20 minutes). Add bag of chocolate chips after chilling.  Bake at 300 degrees for about 12-15 minutes, or until edges are golden.
