Earthquake predictability — are we there yet?

, Ph.D., whose latest book is a biography of famed seismologist

, will give a talk on “Predictable Earthquakes” Thursday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Sandhu Conference Center at
Chapman University
.

Dr. Hough is a seismologist at the United States Geological Survey in Pasadena and scientist in charge of the office.

She has served as an editor and contributor for many journals and is a contributing editor to
Geotimes
Magazine. She is the author of four books, including
Earthshaking Science
(Princeton).  Dr. Hough has also written numerous articles for mainstream publications such as the
Los Angeles Times
. Her latest book is
Richter’s Scale: Measure of an Earthquake, Measure of a Man
. Dr. Hough graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982 and is a University of California, San Diego Alumna, earning her Ph.D. in geophysics from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1987.  The talk is presented by the Schmid College of Science and is free and open to the public.  For more information, call 714-289-2040.
