Milena Kitic, artist-in-residence, Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, will perform the leading role in Carmen at the Renee & Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall during its February 2015 season.
Mark Maier, Ph.D., association professor, and Lori Zucchino, adjunct faculty, both from the College of Educational Studies, Leadership Program, delivered an all-day keynote session at the four-day Gulfstream Aerospace Safety Summit in Savannah, Ga., on Feb. 10. Their session on “Leadership Integrity: Creating a Climate of Open Communication” was attended by more than 60 participants, including Gulfstream safety officials from around the world, and senior safety personnel from Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, Honeywell, Wencor, Flight Safety, and the FAA. Gulfstream is the world’s leading manufacturer of private/corporate jets.
Ramesh P. Singh, Ph.D., professor, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Schmid College of Science and Technology, was conferred a Fellowship of the Indian Geophysical Union for his contributions in the field of Earth Sciences during 50th Annual Convention “Sustainability of Earth System – The Future Challenges” of the Indian Geophysical Union held at the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, India, Jan. 8-12. His visit was partially supported by the Sustainability Committee of Chapman University. Dr. Singh gave an invited talk titled “Melting of Himalayan Glaciers: Impact of Dust or Black Carbon?” at the convention.
Dr. Singh also gave an invited talk titled “Increasing Atmospheric Pollution and Solar Dimming” at the Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI), Gandhinagar. India on Dec. 24 and “Land-Ocean-Atmosphere Coupling Associated with Earthquakes” on Dec. 26, at the Indian Seismological Research Institute, Gandhinagar, India.
Vernon L. Smith, Ph.D., Chapman University professor of economics and law and 2002 Nobel laureate in economic science, visited Texas A&M University on Feb. 7 as one of nine nationally and internationally prominent scholars to be formally inducted as Faculty Fellows of the Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study (TIAS). TIAS, which has a mission of bringing nationally and internationally renowned scholars to TAMU for extended visits to interact with faculty and students, is now in its second year of operation and is modeled after Princeton’s famed Institute for Advanced Study. All the new Fellows received a small bronze reproduction of Rodin’s “The Thinker” statue.
Justin Walsh, Ph.D., assistant professor, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Art, recently published Consumerism in the Ancient World: Imports and Identity Construction (Routledge Monographs in Classical Studies). Professor Walsh has worked for more than a decade at archaeological sites across the Mediterranean, especially Morgantina in Sicily, and has been the recipient of a Rome Prize, a Fulbright Grant to Greece, and numerous other awards. Jeanie Randazzo, art department administrator, and graphic design major Summer Woodward ’15, are highlighted in the acknowledgments.
