The Chapman University Board of Trustees has voted to name the site of the university’s newest research facility the Daniele C. Struppa Research Park, in honor of President Daniele C. Struppa.
This facility, currently under renovation at the historic Lydia D. Killefer School site, will serve as the new home for Chapman’s renowned Institute for Quantum Studies and Advanced Physics Laboratory. The board’s decision reflects President Struppa’s nearly 20 years of service and his visionary leadership in bringing this project to life.
Under President Struppa’s leadership, Chapman has attained R2 status for high research activity, enhancing the university’s national profile, the university’s endowment has more than doubled, and new academic programs and state-of-the-art facilities continue to be developed.
The historic Lydia D. Killefer School was purchased by the university in 2020 and approved by the planning commission in July 2024. The renovation plans ensure the preservation of the Killefer School’s historic essence, while adapting its interior for research, offices, meeting spaces and community-accessible exhibitions.
One notable feature of the renovation is a new entrance from Olive Street, which will lead to a revitalized historic lobby prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility. Outdoor spaces and a courtyard will also be enhanced, fostering a sense of community. A semi-public community room is also being added to engage the broader public.
The renovation is expected to be completed by spring 2025, with a celebration to follow.
