Chapman professors to deliver second set of lectures at Nicholas Academic Centers

Chapman University religious studies professor Carmichael Peters, Ph.D., will discuss “What is Philosophy?” and film and media arts professor Adam Rote will talk about “Art at the Speed of Light” in the second segment of the  Nicholas Academic Centers’ 2011 “Visiting Scholar Series” on Saturday, Feb. 26,  from 9 a.m. to noon in the Centers’ Annex at 313 North Birch Street, 2

The series is aimed at introducing high school students from underserved communities in Santa Ana to a college academic environment, while strengthening ties with highly respected local universities. 

“Each month NAC students get the opportunity to interact with top scholars on critical subjects,” said Dr. Henry Nicholas, Co-Founder and former CEO of Broadcom Corp., who partnered in 2007 with retired Superior Court Judge Jack Mandel to establish the Nicholas Academic Centers. “We are privileged to work with Chapman University to make this important lecture series possible.

“Our objective at the Centers is to prepare students to succeed at the nation’s best colleges and universities,” said Corina A. Espinoza, the Centers’ Executive Director. “The ‘Visiting Scholars Series’ helps students realize that they can accomplish any objective they set for themselves.”

In the first series of lectures, held from September through the end of last year, NAC students heard Chapman professors discuss a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the origins of mathematics to indigenous cultures. In the first 2011 lecture in January, Chapman University economics professor and Nobel Laureate Vernon L. Smith and his colleague Bart Wilson introduced NAC students to “Experimental Economics.”
