On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Chapman University recognized volunteers from across campus during a reception at the Fish Interfaith Center. The event, which was hosted by the Office of Engagement and Volunteerism, celebrated alumni, parents and families, and members of the community who use their time and talent to make the university community thrive.
“Each of you has played a critical role in shaping the Chapman experience, and your contributions have positively impacted the university and our students,” said Nicole Bigley, director of engagement and volunteerism. “You serve on boards, volunteer at events, support our students’ professional development, share your expertise in the classroom and on panels, judge competitions, and support Chapman in countless ways. Your efforts enrich our campus and make Chapman University a better place every day.”
This was the second year for the volunteer recognition event, and this year saw an increase in the number of volunteers who were invited and in attendance, thanks to strong campus collaboration. The support and involvement across campus meant that event organizers were able to ensure volunteers from various schools and colleges, and from departments such as athletics, admissions, student engagement, career and professional development, events and more were part of the thank you celebration..
“Your unwavering commitment ensures the success of our programs and events year after year, and I cannot thank you enough for your dedication,” said Bigley.
During the reception, two special awards were presented to Chapman Family members who have shown exceptional service to the university community.
Outstanding Alumni Service Award
The Outstanding Alumni Service Award recognizes a Chapman graduate who demonstrates outstanding commitment to the Chapman community through direct and ongoing service. Nominations are made by fellow alumni, and the honorees are selected and presented by the Alumni Association Board of Directors. This year’s award was presented to Leika and C.J. Bishop.
The Bishops, Chapman sweethearts who graduated in 2005, have contributed their time to their alma mater for 20 years. Leika, who is the director of commercial alignment for Vista Apex Dental Products, has served as an advisor to her sorority, Delta Gamma, worked with Chapman’s Pre-Dental Society, is an active member of the Schmid College Advisory Council, and is vice president of engagement and marketing for the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
C.J. is a three-time alumnus—along with his bachelor’s degree, he earned his MBA in 2008 and his Ph.D in 2019. He is a senior research analyst for Coast Community College District and has served as a chapter advisor to his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, helped to prepare Schmid students for professional interviews, and is a member of the Schmid College Advisory Council.
One nominator of the Bishops characterized their commitment to student and university success, saying, “They care about students and they back that up by working tirelessly in multiple ways to make the Chapman experience exemplary for students across the institution at all stages—hosting and welcoming them as incoming Panthers, supporting their families at Orientation, being directly involved with them as organization advisors, celebrating them when they cross the stage to graduate, and motivating them to be engaged alumni.”

Outstanding Volunteer Service Award
The Outstanding Volunteer Service Award was created to recognize a volunteer who has made significant contributions to Chapman University. Associate Vice President of Engagement and Volunteerism Nidhi Vogt presented this year’s award to Akin Ceylan ’90.
Ceylan, who is a parent of two Chapman alumni, is a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, and chairs the real estate committee and serves on the audit and nominating and governance committees. He has also previously served on the Board of Counselors of Argyros College of Business and Economics and the Alumni Association Board of Directors, both as an active member and president from 2016-2018.
In addition to his board positions, he has mentored and offered career advice to students and alumni, guest lectured in classes, served on panels, connected students and alumni with internships and job opportunities, and championed the Alumni Entertainment Industry Mixer to connect seasoned alumni with entertainment-focused graduates.
“How Akin has time for all of his service and commitment to Chapman with a family and his role as an executive at Lionsgate, I do not know,” Vogt said. “I cannot think of a more dedicated alumnus who has an unwavering desire and commitment for the success of the institution, its alumni and students. I can call on Akin for anything and no matter how busy he is, he will make time for Chapman.”
