Philosophy Professor Emeritus Mike W. Martin, who worked at Chapman University for more than 40 years, passed away on April 22, 2024. He was 77.
Martin was known as a great teacher and prolific writer. He received two Valerie Scudder awards for teaching and research and published over 70 articles and 10 books on virtue ethics, medical and professional ethics, philosophy of psychology, and the meaning of life, among other philosophical topics.
Martin wrote several popular textbooks, including four editions of Everyday Morality: An Introduction to Applied Ethics; Physical Therapy Ethics (with Professor Emeritus Don Gabard) and Engineering Ethics, which is in its fifth edition. Martin served faculty and students in various roles at Chapman, including three terms on the faculty senate and over 10 years as chair of the Philosophy Department.
Martin is survived by his wife Shannon, daughters Sonia and Nicole and grandsons Dylan and Jesse.
