Chapman University’s Professor Justin Walsh Boldly Ventures into Space Archaeology, Earns Spot in Explorers Club 50

Justin Walsh, a distinguished authority in Art History, Archaeology, and Space Studies, has been included in the prestigious Explorers Club 50. This accolade is a testament to Professor Walsh’s groundbreaking contributions to space archaeology, complementing his prior recognitions from The American Anthropological Association’s General Anthropology Division (AAA) and Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) in 2023.

EC50, an annual recognition bestowed by The Explorers Club, highlights 50 individuals globally for their exceptional contributions to exploration. Walsh’s inclusion in this esteemed group underscores his remarkable work in reshaping our understanding of space exploration, particularly through his role as Co-Principal Investigator of the International Space Station Archaeological Project.

Reflecting on this honor, Walsh stated, “This is an unexpected but deeply-appreciated recognition. I’m thrilled to be included in such an accomplished group of scientists and investigators from every field of research. In the coming months, I look forward to releasing results from our first-ever archaeological work in outer space.”

Walsh’s team has spearheaded pioneering research using machine learning algorithms to analyze historic photos from the International Space Station (ISS). This work has provided unprecedented insights into human adaptation to the challenges of long-duration spaceflight and the unique material culture that emerges in a space habitat.

Their recent publication in the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets takes a groundbreaking look at population distributions in a space habitat, offering profound implications for the design of future space stations. As the International Space Station is slated for deorbit in 2031, these findings are timely and significant for the development of upcoming space exploration endeavors.
