Chapman University Professor Niklas Myhr Offers Fresh Insights on Meta’s Threads and the Evolution of Social Media

“Threads, by going for text as the primary media format, seems to be an example of social media coming full circle from its origins of text-based updates,” says Chapman University Professor Niklas Myhr, a renowned expert in social media and digital marketing.

Myhr recently shared his expertise in a Reuters story on the groundbreaking Threads app by Meta (formerly known as Facebook). Professor Myhr can offer unique perspectives on the app’s impact and significance in the ever-evolving landscape of social media.

Threads like a high school reunion

“Day 2 on Threads hinted at the staying power of social media as users rediscovered the social aspect of social media. People could be seen reestablishing relationships that increasingly had gotten lost in the noisy world of social media dominated by brands and influencers. Clearly cynics were present, too. Some seemed to be quick to dismiss Threads based on merely a day of usage. My advice? Keep an open mind, try it out, and don’t rush to conclusions. (It) will be interesting to see how this plays out!”

Social Media Coming Full Circle with Threads by Instagram

“Threads, by going for text as the primary media format, seems to be an example of social media coming full circle from its origins of text-based updates. Then, when Facebook allowed for images to be shared, they were seen as illustrations of an accompanying text whereas Instagram was more image-centric with a text caption as an add-on. Later, with video taking off on all platforms and social audio becoming a thing, text started taking a back seat on social media.”
