Chapman University Measures Performance of California Companies in New Custom Stock Index First-of-its-kind state index will be a bellwether for the California economy

The Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University has established a first-of-its-kind California 100 Index, calculated by Standard & Poor Dow Jones Indices. The Chapman University CA100 is based on the capitalizations of the top 100 California-domiciled companies with common stock listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ.

“With a gross domestic product of $3.63 trillion, California is poised to overtake Germany as the fourth largest economy in the world,” said Henrik Cronqvist, dean of the Argyros School of Business at Chapman. “By regularly reporting on the performance of this index and the top corporations in California, we will provide new insight that will be valuable to investors, businesses and policymakers in the Golden State and beyond.”

The CUCA100 index has increased a total of 35% since the baseline value of 100 on January 1, 2023.  By comparison, the broader S&P 500 rose by only 13.85% during this time. The top 10 constituents by index weight include household names and the year-to-date returns (as of 6/22/2023) of these companies reflect California as a global tech hub:

Apple Inc.                 43.74%

NIVIDIA Corp          195.19%

Alphabet Inc.             38.11%

Meta Platforms Inc.  132.51%

Visa Inc. A                   9.13%

Broadcom Inc.            45.51%

Chevron Corp              -15.00%

Salesforce, Inc.           55.40%

Cisco Systems Inc.      6.81%

Adobe Inc.                   40.40%

The CUCA100 is one of the first S&P Custom Indices to be owned by a university and the only index that focuses on public companies domiciled in California. Earlier this spring, the university established the Chapman University OC25, which tracks the top 25 companies domiciled in Orange County.

The Chapman University indices are under the tickers CUCA100 and CUOC25 can be monitored in real-time here or via Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance and other widely used financial news platforms.
