Michael Ibba, dean of Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology, is helping to define national research priorities at the intersection of biology and engineering as a member of the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA), a five-year initiative funded by the National Science Foundation.
The alliance recently released a report that includes “8 Impossible Things,” envisioning scenarios that may become possible through engineering research.
Dozens of engineering research priorities are outlined in the report, which identifies three common research threads: sustainable solutions involving repurposed or recycled materials; inclusive design and research to serve all populations equitably; and affordable approaches that ultimately provide low-cost solutions.
