Luke Nichter Appointed to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Advisory Committee at the National Archives

Luke Nichter, who holds the James H. Cavanaugh Endowed Chair in Presidential Studies in Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, has been appointed to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Advisory Committee at the National Archives. The National Archives is the nationwide system of archives that includes presidential libraries, such as the nearby Nixon Library.

Established in 2014 to foster dialog between the archives and the requester community, the advisory committed solicits public comments and develops consensus recommendations for improving FOIA administration and proactive disclosures.

“The committee plays a vital role as an interface between the public and the federal government when it comes to freedom of information and holding our elected officials accountable. I look forward to the role I will be able to play on the committee,” says Nichter.

In 2020, Nichter was named a presidential appointee to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, which advises the White House and Congress on historic preservation policy, a position he still holds.
