The Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Student Government Association and four different colleges will collaborate to host Diversity Community Cafes during the spring semester. Beginning Feb. 27, these events will invite students, faculty and staff to come together to discuss important issues impacting students of color and marginalized communities.
Through open dialogue, these events seek to create lasting changes within different colleges at Chapman University. To help facilitate these discussions, members of the Student Government Association will facilitate with guided questions.
These events are college-specific and designed to promote the following:
- Support diversity, equity, and inclusion in and out of the classroom, creating a bond between students, faculty and staff
- Encourage dialogue about important issues of inclusion
- Inspire students, faculty and staff to work together to create lasting change and practices that support students of color and/or marginalized communities both in and out of the classroom within the specific colleges
“The discussion will allow participants to speak openly about behaviors or experiences that have led them to want to strengthen inclusion in these colleges, while also highlighting some of the best practices that students, staff, and faculty have seen in their college in relation to diversity and inclusion.” Says Kara Ward, administrative coordinator with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
The idea to host dialogues within colleges grew from a gathering developed by Chapman students Regina Bryant and Jackie Palacios ’19 in spring 2019. During the spring semester, Schmid College of Science and Technology, Fowler School of Engineering, Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and Dodge College of Film and Media Arts will be hosting Diversity Community Cafes at the following times:
