Charlene Baldwin, dean of Leatherby Libraries, and Rev. Gail Stearns, Ph.D., dean of the Fish Interfaith Chapel, associate professor, Department of Religious Studies, were guest speakers at the Interfaith Iftar on June 20 June at the Islamic Society of Orange County. Stearns and Baldwin spoke about the University’s interfaith programs and activities at the iftar gathering, a meal Muslims serve to break their daily fast during Ramadan.
David Kiddie, assistant professor, Department of Art, Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, served as juror for the 53rd annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition on June 17. Kiddie selected winners in painting, drawing, sculpture and photography and picked the juror’s choice award from entries by more than 140 artists.
Whitney McIntyre Miller, Ph.D., assistant professor, College of Educational Studies, co-authored a chapter with Michael Wunduh in the upcoming book Peace Leadership: The Quest for Connectedness, edited by Stan Alamadas and Sean Byrne. The chapter is titled “The Integral Perspective of Peace Leadership: The Life and Work of Christian Thorpe of Sierra Leone.”
Lilia Monzó, Ph.D., associate professor, College of Educational Studies, wrote a preface to a new book, Symbolic Violence in Socio-Educational Contexts – A Postcolonial Critique, edited by Anna Odrowąż-Coates and Sribas Goswami.
Ramesh P. Singh, Ph.D., professor, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Schmid College of Science and Technology, attended the first joint meeting of the Japan Geoscience Union and the American Geophysical Union in May in Chiba, Japan. Fernando Silva ’18, an undergraduate in Chapman’s Environmental Science and Public Policy program, presented an oral paper co-authored with Singh titled “Meteorological Parameters and Their Association with the Vegetation Stress during 2001-2016 in Brazil Using Satellite Data.” In addition, Singh gave an invited talk at the International Workshop on Earthquake Preparation Process in Chiba titled “Changes in Ground Water Level and Linkage with the Meteorological/Atmospheric Parameters Associated with Earthquakes.”
