Student selected to civic learning internship

Tyler Ferrari ’19, from Chino, Calif., cares about engaging students in politics. Now his dedication to that cause has earned him special honors. Ferrari has been selected as one of the three student interns for NASPA—Student Affairs Educators in Higher Education’s Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement conference.

In his role, he will organize the content for all the students attending the conference, including planning events and communicating with possible speakers.

“He’s really working with professionals who have been trying to enhance and advance this work,” said Justin Koppelman, Ph.D., assistant director of Student Engagement for Civic Engagement Initiatives.

And Ferrari will do even more than that. During the summer event he will talk to students and educators from around the country, learning what works to engage students in politics.

This includes ideas he can bring back from those in the host city, Baltimore.

“It’ll be great to have firsthand experience from protesters to see what works. Petitioning the city council, petitioning the attorney,” Ferrari said.

Even though Ferrari has the honor of attending the conference, everyone at Chapman benefits, Koppelman said.

“A student can bring this experience back and shape our programming that revolves around civic engagement and learning. Hopefully this can shape the work that he does in the years to come,” said Koppelman.
