Paging all book fans and film buffs to the Big Orange Book Festival, Oct. 11-13


Crime novelists, science-fiction authors, television writers and creators of just-slightly-scary stories for grade-school readers will be among the more than 70 top storytellers at Chapman University for
The Big Orange Book Festival
, the university’s fall celebration of books, writing and storytelling, Friday, Oct. 11, through Sunday, Oct. 13.

Among the headliners for the festival of free author talks, readings and “Based on the Book” film screenings will be Lara Spencer, the lifestyle anchor for Good Morning America and author of
I Brake for Yard Sales
. Crime novelist Marcia Clark, who made headlines as the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial, will discuss her latest books. And Bill Rosemann, editor at Marvel, publisher of legendary action comics, will be on hand to introduce a special screening of the blockbuster movie

The storytelling magic kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. with a screening in Memorial Hall of
The Princess Bride
, the timeless comedy classic directed by Rob Reiner. Saturday and Sunday panels and talks begin at 10 a.m. each day and continue throughout the afternoons.

Among Saturday’s highlights:

  • A Conversation with Alan Cheuse, an award winning novelist and frequent contributor to NPR’s All Things Considered, and Michael Silverblatt, host of KCRW’s Bookworm, with author and Chapman University professor Tom Zoellner, 11 a.m. in Argyros Forum 201.
  • I Brake for Yard Sales, with author Lara Spencer, 12:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
  • An Hour with Richard Paul Evans, author of the phenomenally successful best-seller The Christmas Box, 2 p.m., in the Fish Interfaith Center.
  • Screening of The Avengers, with Marvel editor Paul Rosemann, 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall


Among Sunday’s highlights:

  • Out of the Box, with award-winning science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson, who will discuss his best-selling novels, including the Mars trilogy and his latest novel, 2312, 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall.
  • Derek the Ghost: An Hour with Derek Taylor Kent, author of the Scary School series, 12:30 p.m., Argyros Forum 206.
  • Writing for and About TV, a panel discussion with David Iserson, Andrew Kaplan and John Vorhaus, with moderator Morgan-Read Davidson. Between them, they have written for or about SNL, New Girl, James Bond, Homeland and others, 12:30 p.m. Argyros Forum 201.
  • A Dialogue with Marcia Clark, the best-selling author and former prosecutor will talk about her fiction and nonfiction works, including the Rachel Knight series, 2 p.m., Memorial Hall.
