Under the leadership of Editor Michelle Thomas (’12), Chapman’s student newspaper, The Panther, bested such university newspapers as The Daily Bruin (UCLA), The Daily Titan (CSU Fullerton), the Los Angeles Loyolan, (Loyola Marymount), The Golden Gate Xpress (San Francisco State University), the University Times (CSU Los Angeles) and six others to place second in General Excellence among 4-year university papers in the California Newspaper Publishers Association annual awards. Cal State Chico’s daily took the top honor.
“The honor is even sweeter considering that The Panther was competing against dailies with much larger staffs, circulations and resources,” said Susan Paterno, professor of English and director of Chapman’s journalism program. “We extend grateful thanks to President Jim Doti, Dean Jerry Price, Dr. Patrick Fuery and Dean Patrick Quinn for providing funds to send five Panther editors to San Jose to receive their award Saturday.”
In other Chapman journalism news, Paterno says, “check out the latest edition of Prowl, our digital magazine covering campus life, at www.prowlmagazine.com.”
