This Saturday, Feb. 4, a coalition of organizations will present a large professional/social event on stuttering at Chapman University – one that will bring together young children and teens who stutter, as well as their parents, members of stuttering self-help groups and speech-language pathologists.

“Children, Teens and Adults Who Stutter: Families, Professionals and Friends Working Together” will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bush Conference Center, Beckman Hall 404.   It marks the first time this event has been presented in California.  The event is hosted by
FRIENDS: The National Association for Young People Who Stutter
, The Stuttering Foundation, and Chapman University’s communication sciences and disorders program within the College of Educational Studies.

The conference’s guest speaker is Patricia Zebrowski, Ph.D., CCC/SLP, a board-recognized specialist in fluency disorders who has lectured nationally and internationally and conducted research on the evaluation and treatment of stuttering.  Facilitators and presenters include Judy Montgomery, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, professor and chair of the communication sciences and disorders program at Chapman University; Susan Meyers Fosnot, Ph.D., a member of the phonetics lab at UCLA, adjunct professor at Chapman and private practitioner; Loryn McGill, M.S., CCC/SLP, a private practitioner providing therapy primarily for teens and adults who stutter;  Steffi Schopick, M.A., CCC/SLP, a private practitioner treating preschoolers through adolescents who stutter; and Lee Caggiano, M.A., CCC/SLP, co-founder and director of FRIENDS and a board-recognized specialist in fluency disorders.

This one-day event will feature separate workshops for adults and young people, with a format featuring brief presentations, small discussion groups and panels.  Emphasis will be placed on integrating treatment techniques and support services for people who stutter.  Offerings for children will include enjoyable workshops on stuttering facilitated by speech-language pathologists and members of the adult stuttering community, so youngsters can meet others who stutter and gain confidence in communicating.

Nearly 200 participants have already registered for the event, from across Orange County and the Los Angeles area.  All Chapman University graduate students in communication sciences and disorders will be participating.  For registration fees and availability, please call 866-866-8335.
