There’s another mountain climber in the Chapman University family.

Jenna Keiper ’10 plans to travel to Tanzania next month to take on Mount Kilimanjaro and raise money for the orphaned children of nearby Arusha, a city near the base of the famous mountain. Keiper hopes to raise $15,000 toward the care and education of the 10 young residents of Arusha Cottage, a home operated by
Compassion International
.

“My attention was brought to the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in Tanzania by my father, who is currently teaching university students in Arusha,” says Keiper, who double majored in dance performance and Spanish. (Keiper’s
undergraduate research
made news, too.)

And when one of your regular favorite study haunts is near the
Doti-Struppa Mountaineering Alcove
in Leatherby Libraries, it’s hard not to catch the climbing bug.

“I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in the library by the atlases and pictures of world mountain peaks conquered by the Chapman community,” Keiper says. And mountain climbing seemed like an ideal metaphor for the humanitarian challenge she set for herself, as well.

“Extreme poverty, disease and death are terribly large obstacles in the path to a good education and general well-being. I will climb this mountain for the 10 children of Arusha Cottage,” says Keiper.

Anyone who wishes to support Keiper’s project may do so by visiting the
Compassion International giving link
and notating “HVD – Arusha Cottage” in the special instructions box at the bottom of the form.
