Marvin Meyer, Ph.D., Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies and chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has just published another book, written with the poet Willis Barnstone and entitled
Essential Gnostic Scriptures: Texts of Luminous Wisdom from the Ancient and Medieval Worlds – Including the Gospels of Thomas, Judas, and Mary Magdalene
(Boston & London: Shambhala, 2010). “This volume has something for anyone who appreciates mystical and gnostic literature,” Meyer commented. “There is poetry and prose of Jewish, Greco-Roman, Christian, and Islamic mysticism in the book, along with Mandaean, Manichaean, and Cathar texts. There is love and longing, violence and serenity, myth and magic, and mystical gnosis abounding. Thomas has no more doubts, Judas is the confidant of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene is better than even Dan Brown could have imagined. And the book is out just in time for the holidays.”
