A candlelight vigil to remember the young people victimized by intolerance and bullying for their sexual orientation, in incidents at Rutgers University and elsewhere, will be held on the Chapman University campus at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14.
“Last week, two young men took their lives because they were harassed for being gay. These tragedies accompany at least three similar instances of young people taking their lives this year because of the trauma of being bullied for their actual or perceived sexual orientation,” says Jayne Kacer, assistant dean of student and alumni affairs at Chapman University School of Law and co-adviser to OUTlaw, a student society at the law school.
The vigil is sponsored by
OUTlaw
, the undergrad
QSA
and the
Safe Space Committee
of Student & Campus Life and will begin on the steps of Memorial Hall. Following a few words of remembrance, participants will then walk to the Plaza and back.
