Oxford scholar to discuss the Resurrection, philosophy, faith

Richard Swinburne
, one of the world’s leading philosophers, authors and scholars of theology and philosophy, will deliver a guest lecture titled “How to Assess the Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13 in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel.

“Richard Swinburne is one of the most important philosophers alive today. There’s no question about it,” says Charles Hughes, Ph.D., associate professor,

, Wilkinson College. “He changed the landscape of philosophical theology and the philosophy of religion in many ways.”

Professor Swinburne’s Wednesday talk caps off a visit that included other appearances at Chapman University, including with two undergraduate classes taught by Dr. Hughes, for whom Professor Swinburne was a doctoral supervisor at
Oxford University
. Professor Swinburne met with the Freshman Foundations course “The Christ of History and the Jesus of Faith” and the upper-division philosophy course “Religion, Knowledge and Evil.”

“He’s a wonderful person, devoted to the philosophical enterprise itself and to helping others to think through very important philosophical and religious questions and issues,” Dr. Hughes said.

Professor Swinburne was Nolloth Professor of Philosophy of the Christian Religion, Oxford University. He is the author of many books on the nature and justification of religious beliefs and other areas of philosophy, including the philosophy of mind and epistemology.
