Hopping on a bicycle isn’t a big deal for most teen-agers. But John Snyder’s 15-year-old son has Down syndrome, and cycling was a challenging skill that proved tough to master.

But thanks to a program called “Lose the Training Wheels” — and his father’s staying power – Joey succeeded this summer. Snyder, systems and equipment manager at
Dodge College of Film and Media Arts
, and his son, Joey, were featured in an
Orange County Register
story about the program, aimed at helping teens with atypical neurodevelopment master bicycling. Snyder attended the program with Joey while camping at San Onofre State Beach, breaking away from the sun and surf to pedal around Soka University.

“It was fun, but it had its challenges,” Snyder says.
