The music ranged from vintage Beatles to the Village People’s crowd-pleasing “YMCA.” The picnic baskets held everything from hummus to ginger snaps. The adults enjoyed the shade, the kids splashed in the fountain.

And everyone seemed simply happy to spend Friday evening enjoying the first Free Summer Concert of the season at Chapman University’s Attallah Piazza, featuring the classic-rock band The Answer.

An estimated 750 people attended the concert, according to Randy Burba, chief of public safety. If you weren’t among them, don’t fret. There are two more scheduled concerts in the Alumni Association-sponsored series. Paperback Writer, a Beatles tribute band, plays Aug. 6, and The Alley Cats, a premier doo-wop group, returns for the third straight year for an Aug. 13 show. All concerts begin at 5:30 p.m., and the piazza opens for early picnicking at 4:30 p.m.
