It’s just hours away now – the first Summer Concert at the Attallah Piazza. If you’ve never been to one of Chapman’s free outdoor summer concerts, you’re in for a treat.  And if you have been, you know why it’s the place to be tonight. Balmy weather, classic rock, lots of Chapman friends, free admission and all the popcorn and lemonade you want! Don’t fret if you didn’t pack a picnic to work today. Aaron Neilson, general manager of Sodexo dining at Chapman, promises tasty summer fare and low-cost combo meals. See you there!

And a few more quick notes:

  • We hear that the Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills will honor Baron Kelly, Ph.D., assistant professor of theatre at Chapman, at its annual gala in September. Dr. Kelly will be recognized for his contributions to education and the theatre arts along with South Coast Repertory co-founder Martin Benson. We’ll have more information on this in the days ahead.
  • Lift that bale, tote that barge, eat that blueberry. The food science team running taste-test panels on blueberries and peaches this summer for a U.S. Department of Agriculture project has received about 2,000 lbs. of peaches and they expect another delivery Monday.  They need us to do our part. Tasters will be needed again Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 22, in Hashinger 103. It’s quick and easy and each participant is entered into a drawing for $50 gift card.
  • If you’re thinking the campus is a little too quiet, check in on Chapman’s Facebook page, where the beat goes on all summer. Lots of student chat about textbooks, class scheduling and housing assignments, and there’s a lively conversation of the perennial urban myths swirling around Chapman’s connection to the totally fictitious film The Fourth Kind, a feature film made by a Chapman alumni. Did we mention that it’s fictitious?
  • They’re still firing up the grills at Randall Dining Commons, where they’re dishing up about 7,000 meals a week for summer campers trooping around campus. Burgers and pizza are the favorites, but there’s also a selection of salads and entrees “for the adult campers,” Neilson says. Summer lunch is $8.99 with a Chapman faculty/staff ID.
  • More food news. Just for fun Jazzman’s is offering a special $4.29 blueberry pancake breakfast with bacon and eggs cooked to order Monday, July 26, from 7:30 to 10 a.m.
