Guggenheim hosts summer salon of eclectic art

What do you get when you invite a mixed bunch of artists to a party and ask each to bring their work, a friend’s artwork and something from their private collection?

A little this, a little that and an eclectic exhibit titled “New Used Borrowed,” set to open next month at
Guggenheim Gallery
in the Moulton Center at
Chapman University
.

“New Used Borrowed” runs July 5-30, with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m. July 10. The exhibit started with nine artists contributing their own work, and with each inviting another artist to add to the exhibit. Then the nine chose a piece of work from their private collections – by still another artist – and loaned it to the exhibit.

The result is a potluck of art from artists whose work is vastly different from one another, but who are linked by association, friendship and community, says David Michael Lee, adjunct professor of art at Chapman and exhibit curator.

“I work with a diverse group of artists. Really none of our work shows together. It’s not really the same, so we were trying to develop a show where we could all be included,” says Lee, who is also assistant curator of Chapman University’s Phyllis and Ross Escalette Permanent Collection of Art.

Among the pieces will be photography, sculpture, mixed media and abstract and realist paintings.

The Guggenheim Gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
