A roster of international faculty and some of Chapman’s leading professors will tackle two of humanity’s biggest issues Wednesday – war and peace.

“The Ethics of War and Just Peace” conference opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday, in Argyros Forum 209, with a welcome by Marv Meyer, Ph.D., professor and chair, department of religious studies, and a talk titled “The project of Revising Just War Theory for the 21
st
Century,” by Joseph Runzo, Ph.D., professor of philosophy and religious studies, and a Life Fellow, Clare Hall, Cambridge University.

Panel discussions continue through the day and examine a variety of topics, including human rights, intervention, post-war justice and religious views of just-war theory. Capping the day’s talks will be an evening presentation titled “The Ethics of Fighting Terrorism: New Principles and Doctrines.” The 7:30 p.m. presentation will open with a speech by Asa Kasher, winner of the Israel Prize Laureate and a member of the Security Committee of Israel, followed by a response from Brian Orend, Ph.D., director of international studies and global engagement and professor of philosophy, University of Waterloo, Canada.

The conference goal is “to get people to rethink the futility and waste in armed conflict and to think about the alternatives to that,” says Patrick Quinn, Ph.D., professor of English and comparative literature, and dean of Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is co-sponsoring the event with the departments of religious studies and philosophy.

All events are free and open to the public. See the full schedule
