Hanukkah
is the festival of lights, an eight-day festival beginning on the 25
th
day of Kislev (on the Jewish Calendar). This year the holiday begins at sundown on Thursday, Dec. 2.
Hanukkah is a celebration of the miracle that happened at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. With very little oil left, miraculously the lamp stayed lit for eight days and nights, when there was only enough to last one day.
The Hanukkah menorah contains nine candle holders. Eight of these candles are meant to be lit one for each of the eight nights, until all are lit on the eighth night. The ninth holder is for the Shamash, the helper candle, which is used to light the others. Hanukkah traditions range from playing dreidle to eating Latkes.
