OK, we’re impressed. Yen Darcy, a card systems specialist for Information Systems & Technology at Chapman University, recently completed her first 100-mile race, the
100-Mile Endurance Challenge
. And she ran the last 25 miles in
Crocs
!
Darcy, 54, is a long-time ultra runner – she ran the
Boston Marathon
with Chapman President Jim Doti in 2005 – and this was her third attempt at a 100-mile challenge. She battled fatigue, aches and pains and shin splints, but “didn’t want to quit.” Switching to the comfy crocs for the last leg of the race helped, Darcy says.
Accomplishing the goal “feels like a million bucks.” Just as important, though, is that the event was a fundraiser for the 100 Mile Club, a program aimed at battling childhood obesity and teaching elementary school children about physical fitness.
Darcy ran the race in 29 hours, and one of her pacers was Julie Mullican, office manager for the Student Health Center. Mullican lives near the
Santa Ana River Trail
where the race passed, so she says it was easy to join Darcy near her 26-mile point. Mullican kept pace for about 10 miles.
“Then I parted my way and she went on through the night. … She’s an amazing woman,” Mullican says.
