These first two weeks of the fall semester have been busy. So we think it’s time to set aside a few minutes and treat yourself to a visit to
Chapman University’s Leatherby Libraries
,where an eclectic exhibit of new artworks gifted to the library have been assembled.
“Treasures from the Leatherby Libraries Art Collection,” is on display through Sept. 17 in the Doy and Dee Henley Reading Room and along the Thurmond and Athalie Clarke Gallery Wall on the second floor of Leatherby. It’s a good opportunity to see these works, some of which will find permanent homes on the walls of Leatherby, but others will only be seen as they are rotated in and out of special exhibits.
One of the highlights of the collection is an impressive group of
monumental brass rubbings
crafted and donated by Phyllis Newton, who lived in England while her husband was on assignment with the United States Air Force. Mrs. Newton donated the collection at the suggestion of her daughter, Kathy Newton Ummel ’84, and son-in-law Stephen Ummel ’85. They are just a few of the 106 brass rubbings and related materials included in the gift.
Other pieces in the exhibit include acrylics, watercolors, oils and a mixed-media triptych given to the library earlier this year by
artist Dick Marconi
.
