Dance major Chloe Albin ’15 strikes a Cirque du Soleil pose during 2011 symposium.

The energy and drama of Cirque du Soleil returns to Chapman University this month when  it conducts its second educational symposium here Friday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 14.

Last year more than 1,400 students and faculty from California, Arizona and Nevada attended the inaugural symposium, directed by assistant professors Alicia Okouchi-Guy from the Department of Dance and Don Guy, head of Entertainment Technology. Both professors have a working relationship with
Cirque du Soleil
.

“This symposium is unique in the fact it celebrates the collaboration between student performers and entertainment technology students. The purpose of the symposium is to promote the development of forward-thinking curriculum and the collaboration between the performer and technician through master classes in a variety of disciplines,” Okouchi-Guy said.

The program was the first of its kind at a university and helped students see first-hand the sort of behind-the-scenes talent and skills needed for what is becoming an increasingly technological industry. With support from Cirque du Soleil, its industry partners and the Chancellor’s Office, the symposium is again free to Chapman students. Attendance for other students and educators is available for a nominal fee.

As part of the two-day symposium, Chapman and Cirque du Soleil will also present two free screenings of Cirque du Soleil films on Friday and Saturday in the Attallah Piazza. Friday will feature
Flow
, a tribute to the artists of the entertainment company’s landmark show “O.” Saturday will feature
The Mystery of Mystére
, at documentary about the making of the legendary Las Vegas show. The screenings will be at 7 p.m.. Both are free and open to the public.

Registration information is available at the
Cirque du Soleil Symposium at Chapman University
website.
