Six candles.
They’re a simple but solemn symbol and their lighting is one of the most moving moments in Chapman’s annual Holocaust remembrance of the six million who perished.
This year Chapman’s “Evening of Holocaust Remembrance” is scheduled at 7 p.m., April 13, in Memorial Hall. The evening features a talk, “The Holocaust: Why We Remember,” by Dr. Michael Berenbaum, the Gold/Weinstein Family Visiting Professor of Holocaust History at Chapman University. Musical tributes will be performed by Cantor Chayim Frenkel of Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation of Pacific Palisades and performance majors from Chapman’s Conservatory of Music. Words of reflection will be offered by Rabbi Heidi M. Cohen of Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, and by Dr. Ronald Farmer, Dean of the Chapel at Chapman University.
And as is tradition the evening will culminate in a lighting of the six candles onstage by Holocaust survivors, accompanied by the winners of the annual student art and writing contest sponsored by the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education.
The event is free. For information, visit https://www.chapman.edu/holocaustEducation/ or call 714-532-7760.
