Message from the President

As my first semester as president comes to a close, I want to share how deeply grateful I am to be part of this remarkable community. Over the past few months, I have had the joy of meeting so many of the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters who make Chapman what it is today. Each conversation has reminded me just how special this place is.

I also step into this role with tremendous appreciation for those who have built the foundation for Chapman’s extraordinary growth over the past 30 years. I am especially thankful to Presidents Emeriti Jim Doti and Daniele Struppa for their leadership, mentorship, and vision, which have positioned the university for an even brighter future.

What excites me most about where we are today is the possibility ahead. Chapman has never stood still. Together, we can continue to raise the bar. My goal is to build on our strengths by continuing to put students first, fostering academic excellence, encouraging collaboration across disciplines, and ensuring that Chapman remains a place where free speech and civil discourse thrive.

You will see many of these priorities reflected in this issue of Chapman Magazine. The stories highlight the people and programs driving our momentum and shaping what comes next.

You will read about a new book from Jim Doti, whose 25 years of leadership helped define Chapman’s exciting story of transformation from a small college to a nationally ranked university. I’m honored to continue building on his transformative legacy.

You will also see how the opening of the new Daniele C. Struppa Research Park marks an exciting milestone in our growing reputation for quantum research and science education (Pg. 20). And you will learn about Professor Vikki Katz’s work leading a new initiative that seeks to shape the future of free speech and civil discourse on college campuses. These are just a few of the exciting stories highlighted in this issue of Chapman Magazine.

As you explore these stories, I hope you feel as inspired as I do about the road ahead. There’s so much to celebrate, and even more to look forward to.

I hope you can join us this spring for some of the programs and activities happening across the university. I look forward to seeing and connecting with many of you on our campuses. Thank you for your dedication to this special university.

Best,

Matt Parlow
President
